Shigeki Tanaka

Shigeki Tanaka is a celebrated fourth-generation blacksmith from Miki City, Hyōgo, Japan, known for his meticulously handcrafted kitchen knives. His family's blacksmithing tradition dates back to the Meiji period when his great-grandfather began making sickles. The trade was passed down through generations, with Tanaka's father and grandfather also specializing in sickles. However, as demand for traditional sickles waned, Shigeki Tanaka transitioned the family business towards producing high-quality kitchen knives. Tanaka's journey as a blacksmith formally began in 1996 when he trained at the Takefu Knife Village in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, under the guidance of master craftsmen like Shiro Kamo. After three years of intensive training, he returned to Miki City in 1999 and took over the family business following his father's death.

Shigeki Tanaka's knives are highly esteemed for their blend of traditional techniques and modern innovation. He specializes in crafting various types of knives, including Gyuto, Santoku, and Nakiri, using a range of steels such as Aogami (Blue Steel), VG10, and R2/SG2 Damascus. His knives are known for their exceptional sharpness, durability, and aesthetic appeal, often featuring beautiful Damascus patterns and Kurouchi finishes. Tanaka emphasizes quality over quantity, producing small batches of knives to ensure each piece meets his high standards. His work has gained international recognition, with his knives being sought after by both professional chefs and cooking enthusiasts around the world.
