There is plenty of discussion about Benjaman Kamon’s handle designs and its completely understandable. Each of the designs are unique and iconic, they feature some of the best industrial design around. Simply put thay are stunning!
In my humble opinion it’s got to be the blades that draw your attention though. As I sit here writing this text, I am holding this 230mm Gyuto up to the light and letting it show me the perfection that is a Kamon forged and ground blade. As a photographer I learnt a long time ago that light reveals all, be it scratches or slight imperfections in the grind. No detail can hide under studio lighting.
When you buy a Kamon forged kitchen knife you are buying perfection. It is arguable that there are more beautifully finished knives around and I am sure that Ben has his equals, but I am yet to come across a detail that isn’t perfect when it comes to performance or precision.
The handles are just jewlery, don’t get me wrong, they are beautiful and a testament to Benjamin’s skill as a craftsman, but it’s all about the blades.
On this piece a simple, elegant oak and stainless steel “Heirloom” handle truly steps aside letting the blade take the spotlight. The Heirloom handle is the lightest and most subdued of Benjamin’s handle designs and it give this 230mm blade an extremely nimble and surgical feel. This knife is minimalist perfection. Perhaps the signature “Denty” textured finish is the only truly unnecessary element here, and lets face it, it looks very cool.
