The UNILLOY brand was created to take 700 years worth of knowledge and tradition and create a series of modern cast iron cookware products that overcome the image of being heavy, awkward and cumbersome. Based in Sanjo, Niigata the Sanjo Special Cast Company has been producing cast-iron cookware products in the region for over 50 years. The UNILLOY brand was created in 2012 with the goal of developing the worlds lightest cast-iron cookware range.
A partnership was formed with the world famous industrial designer Komin Yamada, the creative mind behind Global Knives. Within a few short years the UNILLOY range became very popular in Japan. In 2014 UNILLOY received its first design award at the GOOD DESIGN awards and 2015 the range received a “Best of the Best” product design award at the Red Dot design awards. With these awards in hand Sanjo Special Cast Co, Ltd decided to bring the UNILLOY range to the world.
Komin Yamada was born in Tokyo in 1947. Yamada studied industrial design and graduated from the Ikuei College of Technology (now Salesian Polytechnic) in 1968. Thanks to an introduction from an acquaintance, he obtained a post as assistant in the Faculty of Industrial Design at Chiba University. Here he learned about design concepts and design modelling. In 1983 he was hired by Yoshikin Cutlery to design a set of kitchen knives, “Global Knives”, which brought him international recognition. Yamada continues to create amazing and beautiful designs including the UNILLOY casserole and skillet.
