Product Description

Tanaka Knives are well known in the kitchen knife industry and the Tanaka family have a reputation for forging super sharp and beautiful blades. Shigeki Tanaka embodies this reputation as a master blacksmith and his SG2 Ironwood series knives are some of the most sort after and desirable kitchen knives on the planet. The R2 series is based on the same blade construction, but with a more rustic, Japanese style.

When you receive your Tanaka R2 Nakiri, the knife comes in a wooden gift box, similar to the Ironwood series, which is lined with red fabric and secured with a cardboard sheath and bubble wrap. The real prize awaits within though.

Each Tanaka blade is really a piece of master craftsmanship. You really won’t find any rough or uncomfortable edges on this knife. The balance point is directly over the choil, making it feel light weight, nimble and comfortable.

Tanka Damascus cladding is something to behold and Shigeki Tanaka’s skill is especially obvious in the Ironwood and R2 Wa series blades. The shinogi (cladding line) is a good 6mm away from the blade edge and consistently distributed from choil to kissaki (tip).

The Japanese style Wa handle is near perfection in aesthetics and function. The long, octagonal shape lends itself well to most hand shapes and sizes, is ergonomic and comfortable to work with and works well in a pinch grip. The handle is well fitted also and all junctions are flushed extremely well, you won’t find any unsightly gaps.

The knife is constructed with R2 steel (Rockwell 62+) which is clad in a 32-layer acid-etched suminagashi, Damascus cladding. The profile exhibited on the edge of this Tanaka R2 Nakiri is a pretty traditional Nakiri shape and lends itself well to almost every cutting style.

The spine has a slight distal taper, at the ferrule it is about 2.5mm thick and gradually thins down to about 1.5mm at the tip. The grind is 50/50 convex, which is perfect for this kind of knife and very simple to maintain. Overall the grind and the distal taper prove to give the knife a very good balance and feel.

After a few hours of use, it is apparent just how beautiful this knife is. The thin blade, perfect balance and overall light weight inspires confidence and reduces fatigue.  The edge profile lends well to push cutting as well as fine detail work.

The beautiful Damascus cladding on this Tanaka R2 Nakiri is extra hard and extremely scratch resistant. It takes abuse very well.

The R2 series knives are great value, hand forged blades. We have used the R2 series in our own test kitchen and find them to be razor sharp, light weight and nimble blades. The Japanese Wa handles are really very comfortable and robust. If you are looking for a premium quality, hand forged kitchen knife that will stand up to trials of everyday use then the R2 series will not let you down.
